  • The Restore Skyline Tier Project located in Northeast Tasmania is a Tasmanian flagship conservation project achieving high quality landscape scale ecological restoration.
  • In the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we are providing a positive and inspiring long term environmental legacy that gives people hope for the future.
  • It is the largest restoration project in Tasmania aiming to restore 2,000ha of Radiata Pine plantation.
  • With over 700 hectares restored to native forest, the project has attracted an array of awards and been recognised for innovation for activating the ecological resilience of site.
  • The project aligns nature conservation with local employment and training, revitalising this remote rural community based on ecologically sustainable principles.
  • The North East Bioregional Network wishes to partner with government, businesses, philanthropists, community and individuals to continue this nature positive initiative and ensure this once monoculture site is returned to thriving biodiverse native forest.
  • Restore Skyline Tier is the catalyst project for the East Coast Conservation Corridor Initiative aiming to connect, sustain and revive the unique ecological values of the East Coast of Tasmania.

The bare steep slopes exposed after pine harvesting are vulnerable to erosion and weed invasion without committed on-ground restoration efforts.

Progress

By activating the soil's remaining native plant seed bank that has survived pine plantations, the area is stabilised and regenerated with original coastal forest vegetation.

Restoration Team

Removing any pine regrowth after harvesting is a critical task for the team. Over 70 people have worked on the project, and are now dedicated to forest restoration and proud of their part in the area's ecological recovery.
